Much-anticipated opening of Canton’s Papaya Fruit Market targeted for pre-Christmas

The parking lot surrounding the Papaya Fruit Market’s Dearborn Heights location was jam-packed on a recent Saturday afternoon, forcing customers hungry for the store’s fresh produce to park on adjacent side streets.

“We’re this crowded on most days,” one Papaya employee noted, offering a reflection as to why the chain is expanding to Canton Township.

The “Opening Soon” banner adorning Papaya’s first western Wayne County location near the intersection of Canton Center and Hanford roads has been replaced by a slick new colorful sign, the first indication that the store is on the verge of opening its doors in the coming weeks.

The space was formerly used by Planet Fitness, which relocated earlier this year to a building on Ford Road.

A Gordon Food Service semi-truck was also spotted distributing a load of non-produce products at the site in recent days.

“We’re hoping to be open before Christmas,” one of the chain’s administrators shared with in early-November. “We’re hearing from a lot of people excited about our opening and we’re equally excited to open the Canton store.”

This reporter’s observations of the Dearborn Heights’ store’s operations are super-encouraging. Once customers enter the store, they are greeted by a sea of fresh fruits. Aisles lined with non-produce items flank the well-organized assortments of fruits and vegetables.

And while the check-out line was consistently lengthy — a reflection of the full parking lot — it moved along efficiently thanks to four or five check-out clerks.

Papaya prides itself on its wide variety of fresh offerings and exquisite customer service. Its online ratings are stellar.

But it’s most telling example of quality may be its consistently packed parking lot — a sign of loyal customers attracted by first-rate produce.
