Canton High School’s new assistant principal of activities and athletics was a short-term resident of the Upper Peninsula and a longtime achiever in the field of education.
The hiring of Kristen Farkas was officially approved by the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Board of Education during its Nov. 22 meeting. Farkas, who succeeds Vernon Crump, served as the district athletic director for Escanaba Area Public Schools from Nov. 21, 2021 until accepting her job at Canton High School.
Prior to her move to Escanaba, Farkas was an assistant principal/athletic director from July 2021 to November 2021, and an elementary and middle school educator for Dearborn Public Schools from September 2004 to June 2021.
During her time in Dearborn, Farkas served as the Bryant Middle School athletic director from 2013 to 2021.
Her athletic background is diverse as she served as the Dearborn Fordson varsity softball coach from 2011 to 2013 and the Fordson volleyball coach from 2007 to 2016.
Farkas earned an associate degree in pre-education from Henry Ford Community College in December of 2000 and a bachelor of arts in elementary education from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in May of 2004.
She secured a master of science in science education from U of M-Dearborn in May of 2013 and a school administrator certificate from Lamar University in December of 2020.
One of the first tasks on Farkas’s to-do list will be to assist in the hiring of a new varsity football coach for Canton High School. Former head coach Andy LaFata resigned following the 2022 season.
